The science

How Radiesse works

Radiesse is a calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) filler suspended in a smooth gel carrier. When injected, it immediately restores volume and structure to treated areas. Over the following weeks and months, the CaHA microspheres act as a scaffold that stimulates your body's natural collagen and elastin production.

As the gel carrier is gradually absorbed, the newly formed collagen takes its place — meaning results don't simply fade away. The tissue itself becomes denser and more structured. This biostimulatory effect is what sets Radiesse apart from traditional hyaluronic acid fillers.

Radiesse is also available in a hyperdiluted form, where it is mixed with saline or lidocaine and injected across broader areas to improve skin quality, texture, and laxity — a technique particularly effective for the neck, décolletage, and hands.

Where we treat

Where Radiesse can be used

Before your appointment

How to prepare for your treatment

Avoid blood thinners

Avoid over-the-counter blood thinners — including aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and supplements like fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, and garlic — for 7–10 days before your appointment to minimize bruising. If you take prescription anticoagulants (such as warfarin, Eliquis, or Xarelto), do not stop them without first consulting your prescribing physician.

Arrive with clean skin

Come with a clean face, free of makeup and skincare products in the treatment area.

Plan your schedule

Avoid important events for 1–2 weeks after treatment to allow any swelling or bruising to resolve.

After your appointment

How to care for your skin afterward

Avoid pressure on treated areas

Don't massage, press, or sleep on treated areas for at least 24 hours.

Skip strenuous exercise

Avoid intense physical activity for 24–48 hours to reduce swelling and bruising.

Stay upright

Remain upright for at least 4 hours after treatment.

Apply cold compresses

Gentle cold compresses can help reduce swelling and discomfort in the first 24 hours.

Your results

What results can I expect?

Immediately

Immediate volume and contouring visible right after treatment.

2–6 weeks

Swelling resolves and collagen stimulation begins. Skin quality and firmness start to improve.

3–6 months

Significant collagen remodeling delivers ongoing improvement in volume, structure, and skin quality.

12–18+ months

Results from Radiesse typically last 12–18 months or longer, with continued improvement from collagen stimulation.

Most patients achieve their goals in a single treatment session. A follow-up at 2 weeks allows Kendall to assess results and determine whether any refinement is needed.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How is Radiesse different from Juvederm or Restylane?+

Juvederm and Restylane are hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers that add volume and can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Radiesse is a calcium hydroxylapatite biostimulator — it adds volume immediately and stimulates collagen production over time. It lasts longer than most HA fillers and produces structural improvements that go beyond simple volume replacement.

How is Radiesse different from Sculptra?+

Both Radiesse and Sculptra are biostimulators that stimulate collagen production, but they differ in how and when they work. Radiesse (CaHA) provides immediate volume correction in addition to collagen stimulation — making it a good fit for patients who want visible results right away alongside long-term improvement. Sculptra (PLLA) works entirely through gradual collagen stimulation, with no immediate volume effect, and is better suited for patients who want diffuse, global rejuvenation over several months. Neither can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Your provider will help you determine which is right for your goals.

Can Radiesse be reversed?+

No. Unlike HA fillers, Radiesse cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase. This makes thorough consultation and an experienced injector essential. Kendall will carefully assess your anatomy and goals before recommending Radiesse.

How long does Radiesse last?+

Radiesse typically lasts 12–18 months or longer. The biostimulatory effect means results don't simply fade — the collagen your body produces continues to provide structural support even as the CaHA microspheres are gradually absorbed.

Am I a good candidate for Radiesse?+

Radiesse is well-suited for adults experiencing volume loss, structural changes, or skin laxity who want results that go beyond what traditional HA fillers can provide. It's particularly effective for patients who want longer-lasting results and are comfortable with a non-reversible treatment. It is not recommended for lip augmentation, under-eye treatment, or areas where reversibility is important.

Is Radiesse safe? What should I know?+

Radiesse has a well-established safety profile and has been FDA-approved since 2006. Common side effects include temporary swelling, bruising, redness, and tenderness at the injection site — these typically resolve within a few days to two weeks. Unlike HA fillers, Radiesse cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase, making provider selection and thorough consultation especially important.
